Music Tour 2017

Sunday 14 May saw 20 of St Mary’s most talented music students embark on our first ever Music Tour. This experience not only gave us an insight into musical life at a tertiary level, but allowed us the time and space to fully immerse ourselves in musical learning and grow as a community.
Our first day involved a lot of travel, followed by a concert by the Toowoomba Concert Orchestra. The highlight of this performance was definitely the classical guitar concerto, which showed incredible virtuosity and musicality. We then settled in to our accommodation at USQ, and finished the day with a friendly game of music trivia (who would have thought the record for a drumming marathon was 133 hours!)

For the next three days, we began every morning with intensive rehearsals. We then participated in various university lectures with staff from the USQ Creative Arts program. We recorded songs we were working on, joined in aural workshops, watched a concert rehearsal, and created our own arrangements and performances with the help of university lecturers. When we weren’t playing and creating music we took some time to enjoy some key cultural landmarks of Toowoomba, including The Empire Theatre and the Japanese Gardens. Our tour concluded with a performance for the 160 students of Yarraman State School. It was great to see our audience enjoy our concert, and see that all the hard work we had done over the tour resulted in a quality performance!
Our students from St Mary’s College demonstrated exceptional focus, diligence, and at times, considerable resilience throughout this tour. They have shown the joy and sense of community that can be created by engaging in an extended period of musical learning. Their talent and determined attitude impressed everyone they interacted with during their time in Toowoomba .

Special thanks need to go to Mr Meertens who drove the bus, Mrs Wright and Miss Franklin for their organisation, and the staff at USQ for donating their time and expertise.
