Taster Day 2019

Wednesday 29 May 2019 was our annual St Mary’s College Taster Day. Year five and six students from all our local primary schools had an amazing day experiencing secondary life at St Mary’s. In the morning students experienced a traditional Welcome to Country from Indigenous Elder Uncle Mark, performances from our College Dance Crew and scenes from our 2019 play The Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe.

To get to know the College a Scavenger Hunt ensued. Students madly ran around the College to find everything that makes up the wonderful St Mary’s. This included the name of our Student Receptionist, Mrs Wheeler, the location of our CITADEL, Pastoral Leaders and the Middle Years classrooms and most importantly, the famous St Mary’s Tuckshop the Nosh Pit.

Lunch time was an array of Hawaiian shirts, pizza and hula hoops, as everyone got to participate in the Bidwill Day celebration activities (thanks Mr Canning!) In the afternoon all student got to ‘taste’ a variety of different secondary classes to truly experience the life of a Year Seven student. Year Five were lucky enough to enjoy Drama with Mr Canning, HPE with Mr Mitchell, DTG with Mr Wadsworth, Science with Mrs Elmer, Food Technologies with Mrs Allikas and Mission and Action with our Chaplain Janette Hagan.  Year Six also experienced Visual Art with Mr Chamberlain, Technologies in our Citadel with Mr Menard and Ms Patterson, learnt about the brain with Mrs Kiss and participated in rotational games with Mr McGahan and our Year 11 Certificate II Sport and Recreation students.

All the teachers have said what a fantastic day it was and how wonderful it was to see so many smiling faces leaving the College. Many students told staff how much they enjoyed the day, with one boy even announcing, “This is definitely my High School!” What wonderful feedback! Thank you to all staff and students who ensured the day was such a success, we are already looking forward to Taster Day 2020.
